Judy, I generally take my photo image and manipulate it a bit in Photoshop Elements. I have an old version. I select grayscale, posterize and/or artistic cutout, selecting 4 - 6 values. Then I print out a large image, trace it, then start sewing - light to dark values. Check Ellen Lindner's site and her double reverse applique technique. I will use other methods as well.
