Work Completed

Ancient Travelers 26 x 26"
Ancient Travelers was completed before Wandjina Revisited.  My organization is something to be improved.   This  was again inspired by petroglyphs - ones in the States.  Raw-edged applique over sponged painted hand masks.  Some machine stitching and lots of hand stitching.

The following is some of my leaf and stamp printing on hand dyed silk scarves.  I have these for sale at First Street Gallery, Neptune Beach, Florida.
I created 10 composition covers for the same gallery.  I do sell the scarves and books at my local gallery as well - Island Art Association.

Fun Time teaching Stencil/screening

Pat's work

Charlie's screening

Sue's layering

Maureen's quite pleased with the added circles

Gail's quite busy

Some more of Charlie's screening

I've just begun teaching surface design on fabric at my local art association:  Island Art Association, Fernandina Beach, Florida.  Last month I shared some printmaking techniques:  making one's own stamps.  This month, it was making ones' own stencils and screen printing with them.  11 brave souls attended the morning workshop.  I learned from last month to just share a few techniques and then "let the people go."  The class was a mixture of folks:  some experienced fiber artists, some new to surface design, and those in between.  From all corners, it sounds like everyone learned something new.  I must say I enjoyed myself.  It's such a grand learning experience for me, the "teacher," to see what the folks come up with.  I think we all had fun!

I'm back from Alaska and ready to create again

I 've almost finished my journal that I did for my Stencilry class.
I added some scrapbook paper and hand painted papers to make 3 signatures and sew them to my cover.

I spaced the signatures too far apart and ended up adding to more signatures of scrapbook paper and music sheets to fill the book up. I plan to add beaded to the threads. And art journal on the inside. I'm thinking of documenting my art experiments.

This all came about due to Mary Ann Moss's online Stencilry classes. http://dispatchfromla.typepad.com/. Again Mary Ann is a fabulously talented artist and teacher.

Conservation Quotes

My FAN group is exhibiting at the Jacksonville Main Library in October. The theme is "The Language of Conservation." This is my spray painted/stenciled entry. I googled the word "conservation" to come up with the definition, synonyms and some quotes to use. I backed the spray painted/stenciled canvas with felt and stitched the words. I cut it up and arranged the pieces. The hanger is a piece of driftwood with a crocheted cord. Hope it gets juried in!! I entered a couple of art quilts as well.

A close up of the piece.
A close up of the top.

"Conservation Quotes"

The painted canvas. I wrote in large letters the synonyms of conservation: protection, management, preservation, safe guard, safekeeping, restoration and maintenance using a marker. Then I spray painted using many stencils.

Spray painting and Stenciling

This is the cover. I love Mary Ann's technique of dribbling paint from a squeeze bottle to make marks. I just love this lime color.

I've been quiet I know. Here are some of my pages for my new Stencil book. I'm taking another online class from Mary Ann Moss. This class involves spray painting, stenciling and stitching. I'm still working on the spray painting and stenciling - particularly the colors of paint. There's a learning curve. I'm not happy with my colors but I think that after adding stamps and collage elements, I'm be much happier. But that will all have to wait until I'm back from my Alaska land and sea cruise. I leave tomorrow. I'm taking a journal which I hopefully will fill with collage and words.

Fiber Pieces take Some Time

"One Among Many" (just a detail) begin with my enchantment over my work table paint cover. I added stenciling and white circles and then machine quilted the piece. I've added fabric beads and seed beads. There's appliqued circles that I have to stitch down. The binding is all done. Yeah.My FAN group (check the right sidebar for further information) put out a challenge to make a 15 x 15" piece using this paper.
This is a close-up image. I had a great time. I appliqued the paper flower and quilted the piece. I then layered the orange batik onto felt, cut out the petals and stitched them individually and attached them down the center of the petals to the quilt. I crocheted a little orange spiky flower and added another flower and attached both with a teeny button. What fun!

The color of this image isn't accurate. The detail image is more like the real piece.

This blurred image is a mock-up of a larger piece that I'll be entering in my local art association (check Island Art Association link for further information). This is a relatively simple piece but I like it.

Yesterday's Stenciling

A favorite stencil I cut modifying a magazine ad. Lace background with 2 of my cut outs using images from internet stencil site and from a Dover book.

Lace background with crab stencil (from internet)

Lace background and my own cut out of bird from a photo.

The following images were printing on 6"square Bristol paper pad, making a small portfolio. The first: doily background, then 3 of my own stencils of Kara, Matt and Baxter.

The following are various various: my own and store bought

All in all, great fun!!! It's sure hot here in Florida making the wearing of the respirator sweaty business.
I came up with the idea of gessosing white canvas to tape to my printing board as I seem to like the results of the overspray. I shall see.

Cutting my own Stencils

These are some of my latest efforts at cutting my own stencils. I'm using an electric stencil cutter and transparencies. Pelican - a favorite seabird. Dancing woman My daughter, more pelicans. Silhouettes of my son-in-law, daughter and their Baxter.

My youthful mom, my dad, my mother-in-law and last but not least, me.
I've sprayed using inks on pages of an old, old book.

Even more Stencil Experiments

These are some of my favorite experiments. I've only started. I'll be adding some painting, stamping, collaging. All in good time!

This last one is a mock-up of a t-shirt design. First Street Gallery has a Sea Turtle Show each summer and I show my "Turtle" work. Last year I discharged black t-shirts. This year I thought I'd put some of my new learning to work. I'll upload a t-shirt once I'm done with them.

More Stencil/spray paint

This is the inside of the portfolio cover. I just love the eyes stencil. I've spray painted various stencils: my own, store bought, and stencils I've cut from Mary Ann's links. http://dispatchfromla.typepad.com/

I'm experimenting and learning. What fun!

Stenciling Away!

Front and Back cover of my Stencilry Portfolio. I am having a ball! I mentioned in a previous post that I've enrolled in an online class with Mary Ann Ross, Stencilry: Pure Experimentation http://dispatchfromla.typepad.com/. I'm using spray paints and fabric spray paints. The regular ones are on paper, which the class is all about. I just have to experiment on fabric, I just have to!! There is a learning curve so practice, practice, practice. I love the layering. I've cut a bunch of stencils, some with the knife but most with the versa-tool stencil cutter - much easier, in my humble opinion. I'll be uploading more images shortly.
