 Here's the announcement.  It's always a good feeling to have my fiber work amongst the painters!  The following images are pieces of my work that were included in the show

Monoprinted fabrics along with hand dyes

 Reduction using beach, then hand stitching after minimal machine quilting.

Monoprints

These are my favorite monoprints I did the other day.  The last two I have been working on finishing them up as quilted wall hangings.  I'll get those images up when they are completed.

Laughing gull

How I love the sea gulls. This one is mounted on 20 x 24" stretcher bars. I played with an image in Photoshop Elements and created applique pieces from that. I sure enjoy the process - one that I've used in "The Ballerina",
Blue Heron, and Silent Charlie. I take the image, erase the background, go into filter and select artist:cutout and play with the numbers. I have a portrait of my son in the works - not too happy with the lips and eyes, so more work to see if I can fix the problem. If not, I'll start from scratch.

I've sent the weekend experimenting with gelatin monoprinting again. I am pleased with some of my results, others not so. But isn't that part of the learning curve!? I'll upload my favorites soon.

New Work

These two pieces were first monoprints on paper which I then printed on specially treated fabric. Then I added a border and machine quilted.

"Beach Combers" is a mixed media piece. I roughly cut fabric strips and spray painted my own bird stencils and machine quilted. Separately, I stenciled the larger birds on old book pages and glues them down using gel medium and added more stitching. I embellished the piece with driftwood, shells and beads.

"Celebrate Shrimp" continues my discharge series. I used my own shrimp stencil, plus some of my own painted and printed discharge fabrics. There's a printed book page as well.

Monotypes while in Vegas

While house and dog sitting for my daughter, I held real art deprived. So..... I went to an art supply store and bought some acrylics. I monotyped (I've been using the term monoprint, but discovered I'm really doing monotype). I added some collage and some painting. I'm planning on scanning these and printing on fabric and add some stitching.

Monoprint Quilted

I decided to add borders and machine quilt another of my previous monoprints. This print has 3 layers - the stitching added more dimension and texture. Ahhh.... the urge to monoprint is creeping up again.

I've completed some pieces using the monoprints I printed up awhile back. I added borders and free motion machine quilted.

Revisiting with Monoprinting

My sister Marlene and I spend an afternoon monoprinting with a gelatin plate. First time for Marlene. We had a ball! I'm still in the experimental stage but enjoying very minute. These are the successful ones.

I posted this on the Art-A-Week blog but my darling sister thought I ought to post it here. I heavily machine quilted a reject stamped piece, then rolled black paint over the whole thing, then rolled some gold paint to finish. I'll be making a book cover, I believe.


I used my own hand carved sea turtle stamp on previously monoprinted fabric. I strip pieced the borders and free motion machine quilted to complete. It's 12 - 15"



Another finished 12 - 15". I used the previously stamped cloth, added strip pieced border and machine quilted it. I apologize for the images. I wanted to get the images up. I'll retake them in better lighting some other time.

Gelatin Plate Printing

I was so excited with my prints that I didn't take the time to iron them properly. My sources/inspiration comes from the books: Making Monotypes Using a Gelatin Plate by Nancy Marculewicz and Create Your Own Hand-printed cloth by Ryna Gillman. I made a clay dam - shaping a clay snake coil into a rectangle, added the Knox gelatin(4 pkg to 1 cup of cool water, mixed, then added 1 cup of boiling water) set to cool, overnight. Removed the clay dam and went at it. I'm very naturally so on went some leaves and of course a circle for the sun. I used a "Gift" cloth (leftover paint on brayer, paint brush, stamps on plain bleached muslin)as a base. I'm getting ahead of myself here. First, I squirted some paint(not too much)on the gelatin, rolled it out, placed on the leaves and the circle, placed fabric on top and gently pressed and rubbed. Pulled off the cloth and voila! Then I printed a ghost print by putting another cloth on top of the plate and rubbed. Another print. Took the stencils off - the leaves and the circle - put them face down on yet another cloth. Took yet another cloth and placed it on the gelatin plate and viola another print. I had a ball playing.
